On August 5, 2020, Global Tailings Review introduced the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. The standard was developed by an interdisciplinary group of experts with the involvement of a group of advisors from a wide range of stakeholders.
The aim of the Global Industry Standard for the management of mining residues is to generally avoid human and environmental damage caused by tailings and to prevent accidents like those in the recent history of mining. The standard is based on an integrated approach to tailings management and aims to prevent catastrophic failures of dam structures and safety mechanisms and to improve the safety of tailings facilities around the world. A gradual change can already be felt in terms of a transparency, accountability and respect for the rights of data subjects. The standard clearly shows that the global interest in sustainable technologies for mine clearance, on which the recomine-alliance is working, is increasing and that the protection of the environment and people will have higher priority in the future.
